@bob

What you've written has got nothing to do with the usability of Ubuntu or other GNU/Linux distributions.

All operating systems have minimum requirements and from the sounds of it (you mention resource requirements) your computers were not meeting them.

One of the great things about GNU/Linux is that as well as the bigger more resource hungry distributions, there are smaller ones much more suited for use on older machines. It sounds like you should be trying some of them.

What I love about the Ubuntu installation is that it is asking you few questions and then do the rest alone. No need to have a look except for the reboot of the computer.
Keep it simple guys!!!!

I personally found Ubuntu easier to install and maintain than Windows XP, using the ISO I downloaded from ubuntu.com, so I'm in agreement with you. Canonical has done a really nice job on it.

Bob-
Very true. While the basic install seems very stable things do occasionally get confusing when trying to load additional apps. I would strongly recommend going with the DVD you can buy off Amazon.com for cheap rather than the ISO if you are looking to keep things clear during the install.

I've tried installing Ubuntu and other flavors of Linux on older computers, but have been frustrated by the difficulties (resource requirements, hangs, etc). I'm glad that you have had successes, but I'm not sure it's ready for role-out among non-technical users and organizations. Not everyone wants to troubleshoot their system all day long.
