Barack Obama + Microsoft’s Photosynth + 1,000,000 cameras = CNN’s The Moment

by Jon Thompson on January 17, 2009

The MomentI just saw Wolf and Anderson remarking how “cool” CNN’s The Moment is going to be.  The Moment is the CNN’s attempt to capture the moment Barack Obama raises his hand to be sworn in as the forty-fourth President.  CNN is asking that as many first hand viewers as possible (they estimate the number at 1,000,000) snap a pic at that exact moment and then email single shots to themoment@cnn.com.  The technical folks over at CNN will then compile the images, using Microsoft’s Photosynth, to create a tapestry of images that we’ll then be able to view live on CNN and at CNN.com.  I think it is a neat idea and I have long been a fan of Photosynth and Microsoft’s newest release Seadragon Mobile for the iPhone.  While I am not sure what the results will be, and I am sure that most photos won’t get uploaded for at least a day or so, I have to applaud CNN’s attempt at staying ahead of the curve when it comes to new technologies.  However, I have to say that I am growing weary of the constant prompts to follow CNN staff on Twitter.  So, if you are at the inauguration and still able to move your frozen fingers you might want to send at least one of your pics to CNN and help make history.
