TOHL – Helicopter-Borne Pipe Laying System Has Humanitarian Applications

by Jon Thompson on August 24, 2012

Check out this inspiring video showing a pipe laying system developed by a group of Georgia Tech grads. TOHL has an interesting concept that could easily be deployed in many of the disaster zones where we work.

I have a dozen questions straight out of the gate but I could see this as a simple solution in some of the camps I have worked as well as a number of other locations. Equipment and tanks would still need to be brought in but the same helo could sling load those into location.

WFP operates numerous Mi-8 helos in a number of locations and those could easily be used to deploy this system. While the initial upfront cost could be high the long term benefit of not having to truck water could also prove significant.

Check out their Kickstarter campaign and help them meet their $30k goal. You can also follow them on Twitter.
